When did Valentine's Day become a holiday?

Valentine's Day has been celebrated as a holiday for centuries. The exact origins of the holiday are unclear, but it is believed to have been influenced by ancient Roman festivals, Christian martyrs named Valentine, and the medieval concept of courtly love. The day began to be associated with romantic love in the High Middle Ages, around the 14th and 15th centuries. It was first officially recognized as a holiday by Pope Gelasius I in 496 AD.
